Mental Health First Aid

  • Mental Health First Aid is a public education program offered by the Loudoun County Department of Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Developmental Services that can help you understand mental illnesses, seek timely intervention, and save lives.
  • Our certified instructors teach two versions of the program, a general Adult program and a program for Adults Who Interact with Youth.
  • These two-day courses are offered free of charge to anyone in the Loudoun community

Action Plan

Mental Health First Aid teaches participants in a five-step action plan, ALGEE, to support someone developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis:

  • Assess for risk of suicide or harm
  • Listen non-judgmentally
  • Give reassurance and information
  • Encourage appropriate professional help
  • Encourage self-help and other support strategies
