New Hires
All non-certified new hires for law enforcement will attend either the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy (NVCJA) or the Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy.

NVCJA
The NVCJA includes a basic law enforcement school and a combined basic deputy sheriff school. The Basic Law Enforcement School is divided into four modules. They are: Criminal Investigation, Legal, Patrol, and Skills. The trainee must meet three separate proficiency standards in order to successfully complete the school. The final grades for the Criminal Investigation, Legal, Patrol, and Skills modules are based on written examinations. The final grades for all performance-based tests are pass/fail. Major components of performance-based training include: First-aid, CPR, defensive tactics, firearms training and driver training.

Combined Basic Deputy Sheriff School
The Combined Basic Deputy Sheriff School is divided into six modules. They are Background Materials, Combined Subjects, Criminal Investigation, Legal, Patrol, and Skills. The trainee must meet four separate proficiency standards in order to successfully complete the school. The final grades for the Background Materials, Combined Subjects, Criminal Investigation, Legal, and Patrol modules are based on written examinations.
