Who uses adult day centers?: Our Adult Day Center program is designed to meet the needs of adults ages 60 and older who have memory loss or other impairments and are unable to stay home alone. Many caregivers may work outside the home and are unable to stay home to care for their loved ones. Caregivers who do not work outside of the home may need respite from caregiving to run errands, socialize, focus on their own medical needs, or just rest.

1. Where are you located?

2. What are your hours?: Each of the three Adult Day Center’s hours of operation are Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

3. Are your Centers licensed?: Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Community Services Adult Day Centers are licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services. Each Center holds a three-year license which is the highest-level license that can be obtained.

4. Who uses adult day centers?: Our Adult Day Center program is designed to meet the needs of adults ages 60 and older who have memory loss or other impairments and are unable to stay home alone. Many caregivers may work outside the home and are unable to stay home to care for their loved ones. Caregivers who do not work outside of the home may need respite from caregiving to run errands, socialize, focus on their own medical needs, or just rest.

5. How often do participants attend?: We offer three schedules for attendance: 2 days (Tuesday/Thursday), 3 days (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) or 5 days (Monday-Friday) per week.

6. Is transportation available?

Transportation is provided within a limited-service area. Please call the Center to find out if service to your home is available. For those using our transportation service, there is an additional fee of $2 each way.

For information about additional transportation options, contact Elder Resources at 703-777-0257. The center does not permit arrival or departure by taxi or other ride-share vehicles.

7. What happens in inclement weather?: During inclement weather, the Adult Day Centers follow Loudoun County Government closures. If Loudoun County Government is closed, the Adult Day Centers are closed. If Loudoun County Government is on unscheduled leave status, the centers will open at 9:00 a.m. but transportation will be canceled for the day. No fee is charged when centers are closed for inclement weather.

8. What do I do if my loved one is feeling sick?: The participant will abstain from attending the center for the duration of any contagious illness including highly symptomatic colds, or strains of influenza or COVID. In the event of illness, please call your Center and speak with the Manager regarding the status of the participant and to plan next steps.

9. How do I know your staff is qualified to care for my loved one?

We pride ourselves on our experienced and professional staff. Each Adult Day Center is staffed by a Manager and Assistant Manager, a Therapeutic Activities Coordinator, Activities Assistants and Client Aides. All our staff are Certified Dementia Practitioners and Dementia Friends. Additionally, all staff are Certified Nursing Assistants or Personal Care Aides.

Our staff training exceeds the Virginia Department of Social Services requirements. We ensure our staff receives training throughout the year as well as an additional three full days of training each year that is primarily focused on dementia care.

10. My loved one needs assistance in the restroom, can you help?: We assist participants with incontinence care with moderate assistance.

11. My loved one needs medications during the day, can you help?: We have certified medication administrators at all Centers. Speak to an Adult Day Center manager for more information.

12. My loved one has a medical need, can you help?: We are a social model adult day program. We do not have medical staff and do not provide nursing level care at our Adult Day Centers. Any participant who has a medical or nursing need as described in the Virginia Uniform Assessment Instrument (UAI) is someone whose health needs require medical or nursing supervision. This care is above the level which can be provided through assistance with Activities of Daily Living, Medication Administration, and the general supervision provided at the center. This may include (but is not limited to) injectable insulin, oxygen therapy, wound care, catheter care, ostomy care, and enteral feeding. Please contact the center for more specific information. If you require nursing level care, please seek advice from your physician.

13. Does the Center provide special diets?: We offer a nutritious hot lunch and two snacks each day. Our meals and snacks meet the USDA nutritional guidelines for an adult meal/snack. We offer a vegetarian option. We do not offer other options for special diets but will work with families to determine how we can best meet your loved-one’s personal needs.

14. Can I or another caregiver attend with my loved one?: Our program is designed to afford our participants the opportunity to be as independent as possible in a safe, supportive environment. We encourage caregivers to use the time that their loved one is at our Center for their own respite, knowing that their loved one is safe and cared for well by our specially trained staff.

15. Do you provide caregiver support?: Yes! We are part of Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Community Services and a program of the Loudoun County Area Agency on Aging (AAA). 16. Is there a fee to attend?

While the Centers are subsidized by Loudoun County, participants are required to pay a daily fee. The daily fee is on a reasonable sliding fee scale based upon the participant’s (and their spouse’s) gross income. Long-term care insurance: Most long-term care insurance policies offer an adult day benefit, if the participant meets the care criteria. Contact your insurance provider to learn more about what benefits your policy provides.

Veteran’s Benefits: Depending on a participant’s service and eligibility, Veterans Aid and Attendance may cover some of the cost of adult day programs. Contact the local VA office at 703-777-0353 or Loudoun.gov/veterans to determine eligibility for benefits or contact the Veteran’s Administration toll-free hotline for assistance at 877-222-8387.

Medicare: Medicare does not pay for adult day services.

Medicaid: The Loudoun County Adult Day Centers are not Medicaid providers.

17. Can I attend if I am not a Loudoun County resident?: There is limited availability for out-of-county participants.

18. Can I come to the Center for a tour?: Absolutely! We encourage any potential participant and family member to come to the Center for a tour. Please call your center location of choice to schedule a tour: Ashburn (571-258-3232); in Leesburg (703-771-5334); in Purcellville (571-258-3402).

19. What is the Admission Process?: Our admission process begins with your call to the Center to schedule a tour. If you are interested in pursuing admission, we will confirm that we have availability and provide you with an admission packet. The next step will be to schedule an admission assessment visit which will include a review of your admission paperwork. This visit will include the potential participant and the decision maker and will take approximately 2 hours. After the assessment is complete and all paperwork, including the physical exam & TB screening (to be completed by your personal physician) are received, final determination can be made on whether we can meet the potential participant’s needs at the Center.
