Loudoun County, VA- A Sterling, Va. man and two juveniles have been charged in an extortion scam where they demanded monies from the victim utilizing a popular messaging app and authorities believe there are additional victims.

Yogesh K. Sharma, 56, and the two juveniles were charged in the extortion scheme after they purported to be a female on the Kik app and messaged with a 25-year-old Lansdowne, Va. man. The conversations began in January and at one point the victim was advised he had solicited a prostitute and needed to pay monies to avoid being arrested.

The victim delivered monies to the suspects on multiple occasions and to multiple locations, including the suspects’ home in Sterling, Va. The victim contacted authorities in February.

Members of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search warrant on the suspects’ home and on a storage facility in Herndon on February 14. All three suspects were taken into custody last night.

The two teenagers were taken to the Loudoun County Juvenile Detention Center on charges of extortion. Their names cannot be released due to the fact they are juveniles.

Sharma was charged with felony conspiracy to commit extortion. He remains held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center on no bond.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the case as there are likely additional victims in our area. If you were a victim of this scam, please contact Detective M. Hall at 571-258-3043 or Deputy First Class J. Totaro at [email protected].
