Two Firefighters Injured During Severe Storm Response

Thunderstorm News Flash Image

At approximately 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 22, 2022, Loudoun County experienced severe storm activity, which resulted in high winds, lightning, and heavy rain. The Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System (LC-CFRS) responded to numerous calls for assistance concerning downed power lines, downed trees, lighting strikes, and other storm related problems. While responding to storm related calls, two firefighters experienced minor injuries. LC-CFRS continues to work with the Virginia Department of Transportation and power crews to open roadways.

One of the more severe storm related incidents was a house fire in the 25000 block of Kinsale Place in Aldie, where LC-CFRS units arrived to find a two-story single-family residence with smoke showing after being struck by lightning. The first arriving crews quickly located a fire in the attic. The fire was extinguished within twelve minutes.

The Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal’s Office has classified the fire as natural, due to a lightning strike and estimated damages at $336,000. Two adults and two dogs were displaced and are staying with family. Smoke alarms were present and functioned as designed. There were no civilian injuries, however one firefighter was transported to a local hospital for a minor injury.

Severe storms bring with them many dangers including downed power lines, downed trees, high winds, flooding, and lightning strikes. The Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System reminds residents to remain weather aware and to never touch downed power lines. At the first sign of smoke or fire get out of the home, go to your meeting place, and call 9-1-1. Fire is not always visible and can spread quickly. Take a few moments to review your home escape plan and to ensure the smoke alarms in your home are installed and working properly. If you’re not sure if your home is protected, visit www.loudoun.gov/smokealarms or call 703-737-8093 to access our free smoke alarm resources.
