It is the 25th anniversary of the passage of the dispute resolution proceedings statute that continues to play an important role in institutionalizing the use of dispute resolution and mediation in Virginia. To celebrate this anniversary, Virginia is celebrating Dispute Resolution Month in March. Mediators and other dispute resolution practitioners help people involved with disputes to find solutions for resolution before seeking litigation or action in the court system. “Seeking a peaceful resolution that results in both parties realizing a remedy in a dispute is a better approach than pursuing litigation in a civil lawsuit,” stated Gary M. Clemens, Clerk of the Circuit Court. “Our civil caseload continues to grow in volume and increase in complexity resulting in civil disputes taking several months and a lot of money to resolve.” Mediation and dispute resolution may result in a swifter resolution at considerably less cost and achieve better satisfaction for all involved. “In many dispute situations, mediation can ensure the final result is beneficial to all concerned and may create goodwill,” claims Clemens.
