Special State Senate Election Set for January 8

A special election will be held Tuesday, January 8, 2019, to fill the unexpired term of the 33rd District seat in the Virginia State Senate. The 33rd Senate District includes parts of Loudoun County and Fairfax County. The seat is being vacated by Jennifer Wexton who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in the November general election. The term expires December 31, 2019.

Important deadlines for the special election include:

  • Candidate Filing: Monday, November 19, 2018 - The deadline for candidates to file for the election is 5:00 p.m., Monday, November 19, 2018.
  • Registering to Vote or Updating Registration: January 2, 2019 - The deadline to register to vote or update an existing registration is 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 2, 2019, if doing so in person or 11:59 p.m. if doing so online
  • Absentee Voting by Mail: January 2, 2019 - The deadline for voters to request an absentee ballot to be mailed to them is Wednesday, January 2, 2019. The request must be received by the Loudoun County Office of Elections and Voter Registration by 5:00 p.m., January 2. Voters may apply for an absentee ballot online.
