Loudoun County Animal Services (LCAS) will host its second annual “Homeward Bound” free pet adoption event from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, May 20, 2017, at the Animal Shelter, 39820 Charles Town Pike, Waterford. Adoption fees will be waived on all adoptable cats, kittens, dogs, puppies, small pets and reptiles. While supplies last, adopters will receive a goody bag for their new pet to include toys, treats and gifts.

In the hopes of finding homes for as many pets as possible, LCAS has transported dogs from overcrowded shelters in West Virginia to Loudoun County. “We are very excited to host this event and use it as an opportunity to help shelter pets from West Virginia,” said Nina Stively, Director of Animal Services. “Raleigh County, West Virginia, receives more than twice the number of dogs we do here in Loudoun County, in spite of having less than a quarter of our human population. With limited resources, they are doing the best that they can, but an event like Homeward Bound is the perfect opportunity for us to help those in need.”

In lieu of adoption, those wishing to help homeless pets can bring donated items or make a financial contribution to the Animal Program Trust Fund. Needed supplies include kitten milk replacer, extra-large chew toys, puzzle feeders, small bags of dry dog or cat food (10 pounds or less), canned dog and cat food, soft treats for dogs and cats, cat toys, dogs toys, collars and leashes.

All dogs and cats adopted from LCAS are spayed or neutered, have age appropriate vaccinations, and leave with a registered microchip to help them reunite with their family if they are ever lost. The standard adoption screening process will apply during the Homeward Bound event and most adoptions can be completed on the same day.

The shelter frequently has many pets available for adoption, including hamsters, guinea pigs, reptiles, rabbits, other small pets and livestock. A current listing of available pets can be found online at www.loudoun.gov/animals.
