Loudoun County Animal Services is celebrating National Cat Day, Thursday, October 29, 2015, in a number of ways, including waiving adoption fees for cats October 10 through October 29, and hosting a special day of feline fun Saturday, October 24, at the Animal Shelter.

In addition to free cat adoptions, Dr. Leslie Sinn, a local veterinarian, will be at the shelter all day October 24, 2015, offering free cat behavior consultations for anyone looking for a little extra feline behavior knowledge. Is your kitty a little too sassy? Having a hard time adjusting to a new baby? Having trouble using the litter box? Dr. Sinn can help. To register for a free, 30-minute consultation, call Amy Martin at 703-737-8097 or send an email . Also on October 24, the public is invited to join the shelter staff for a light lunch at 11:45 a.m. and an educational seminar from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. on “Top 10 Cat Behavior Myths.” To RSVP for the seminar and lunch, send an email to Amy Martin.

Loudoun County Animal Services also offers several reasons why cats outrank dogs as America’s top pet:

  • Cats never require a 5:00 a.m. walk for a “potty break” like their canine counterparts. They don’t need to be house-trained as they instinctively know to use a litter box.
  • Cats can also be left alone for longer periods of time (as long as the food, water, and litter box is well attended)
  • Petting a cat can actually lower your blood pressure.
  • Studies show that cat owners visit their health care providers 12 percent less frequently than those without pets!
  • Just 15 to 30 minutes of quality time with a cat can boost your production of ‘feel-good’ serotonin.

The Loudoun County Animal Shelter, located at 39820 Charles Town Pike, Waterford, has many cats and kittens available for adoption. For more information, including directions to the shelter and photos of cats and kittens available for adoption, visit www.loudoun.gov/animals .
