Loudoun County, VA – A Leesburg man has been charged with first-degree murder after the investigation into a body that was discovered inside a burned home on Steed Hill Lane last week.

Michael F. Bowles, 20, was taken into custody Tuesday in Fairfax County in connection with the fatal shooting of his father. The victim, Mario M. Bowles, 52, was found deceased inside his home.

The fire was discovered shortly after 5 p.m. on Tuesday July 25 when Loudoun County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the area of Bald Hill Road and Steed Hill Lane near Lucketts after a passerby reported seeing smoke in the area. After searching the area, crews discovered the first and second floors to a single family home were on fire.

Due to the amount of fire involvement of the structure, units initiated an exterior attack on the fire to safely extinguish the fire. Crews were presented with water supply and access challenges as the home is in a rural part of the county with no fire hydrants and very narrow driveway and access roads. Fire operations continued throughout the night to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.

On July 26, officials were able to access and search through what remained of the home. At approximately 1 p.m., authorities discovered a body inside the residence. The victim was positively identified by the Office of the Medical Examiner on July 31.

Michael Bowles remains held at the Fairfax County Detention Center and is awaiting transport back to Loudoun County.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the homicide investigation in cooperation with the arson investigation being completed by the Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office.
