Airport Noise Work Group

About the Work Group 

The Board of Supervisors authorized the creation of the Airport Noise Work Group on October 3, 2023, with the goal of developing proposals to address noise generated by airplanes departing Dulles International Airport via its only east-west runway. 

Aviation consultant Vianair has been contracted to lead this work and has recommended a 10-member work group representing communities that are most impacted, or potentially could be impacted by changes that are recommended.

Once a plan has been developed it will be presented to the Board of Supervisors for approval with the goal of engaging the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. 

Current Status  

The county is working with its consultant to assemble the work group with tentative plans to begin meeting at the beginning of 2024. On November 21, 2023, county staff provided a written update to the Board of Supervisors (PDF).
