Why Recycle Computers, TVs & Other Electronics?
Electronics are made with a variety of valuable resources such as precious metals, engineered plastics, glass, steel, aluminum, and other materials, all of which require energy to manufacture. When electronic equipment is simply discarded as waste, the energy value in these resources is lost and substantial amounts of waste and pollution result in the mining and processing of natural resources needed to replace those that were discarded.
Electronics make up approximately 2% of our waste each year, which equates to nearly 6,000 tons in Loudoun County, and most of this material is recyclable.
Law Makes Electronics Recycling Easier
A Virginia law that went into effect in 2009 requires manufacturers to provide free recycling for brand name computers and monitors for residential and home-business consumers. Visit Manufacturer Recycling Programs for a list of participating manufacturers and links to their free recycling mail-back services.
